For a glimpse inside the newsroom and what’s on the minds of some of the reporters you might be working with, check out www.angryjournalist.com. It’s a new Web site (thanks, Bad Pitch Blog, for pointing this out) loaded with F-bombs, a few shots at PR people but mostly rants about low pay, emphasis on quantity vs. quality and the constant struggle against “the man” – so-called “idiot bosses,” slick ad reps and others who wear the suits and earn the big bucks while the struggle in the newsroom continues.
Check it out for yourself. All posts are anonymous, no names are named and all are in response to the question “why are you angry today?” These people are pissed!
Here’s a sampling of some recent profanity-free posts:
Angry Journalist #1083: I’m angry reading about journalists who only have to write three stories a day. Try working for a regional daily and filing up to 10 stories on a busy day. Quality? Occasionally!
Angry Journalist #924: I’m angry that I can’t pay for the basic necessities of my life on my salary as a full-time journalist while the people in the ad department compare their fancy cars!
Angry Journalist #538: I hate broadcast journalists. I hate that while they’re covering vehicle accidents, fires and kittens in trees, I spend 10 hours each day at the county government campus pouring over records that most of them haven’t seen anywhere other than a text book.
Angry Journalist #59: Managing editors (ie two-faced substance abusers) who tell the corporate bosses anything they want to hear to keep their jobs (”Yes, I can fire 20% of reporters and still keep circulation up” – “Yes, I believe the Web is the future”) but then tell staff something else (”Don’t job hunt, we are done with layoffs.” – “Nobody but high school kids are looking at the Web, don’t waste your time thinking about it.”)
Angry Journalist #46: I’m angry that being a “community journalist” doesn’t pay nearly enough to make up for the fact that nine of 10 assignments are about boring-ass (bleep), i.e. the eighth annual Geriatric Rose Gardeners Association awards banquet, held at the VFW Hall this Friday.
