stock-fistBuzz attended yet another new business meeting the other day and had one more glimpse into how some companies are dealing with crisis communications – and it’s not by updating their existing plans!

Nope. Buzz will now call it the “Eric Clapton response.” When the topic of crisis communications comes up, the confident exec extends a fist and calmly knocks on the (wooden) conference room table, saying something along the lines of “we’re in good shape there and really don’t need a crisis plan, but let’s talk about your publicity services.” This was the second time in the span of a week Buzz has heard this response.

Yikes! That means when the crisis does occur (and, yes, all companies experience at least one unplanned situation at one point or another in their lifetimes) Buzz will be called upon for his expertise, but without a plan in place. Talk about expensive!

One more piece of advice from the Clapton song, “Knock on Wood.” Here’s the first line:

“I don’t want to lose this good thing that I’ve got. If I do, I would surely, surely lose a lot…”

Eerie, isn’t it?

Jeff attended this week’s Social Fresh conference at UMBC in Baltimore and asked me to post this video. It’s by Scott Stratten, president of UnMarketing, and was shared by C.C. Chapman (whose presentation was among the best of the conference). Insider social-media humor for sure, but Buzz figured it would help make you look busy at work and ease you toward Happy Hour!

This week’s Baltimore Business Journal showcases @contactjeff as a Twitter account worth following.

The item in “Smart Strategies” notes that PR firms and advertising folks were among the first to use Twitter to promote clients and engage in dialogue with the media. “One of the early adopters in this field was Jeff Davis, a partner with Sawmill Marketing Public Relations.”

“His tweets offer a nice mix of the personal and the professional — and some are quite funny,” the BBJ says. At least that’s their opinion!

In fact, the BBJ was the first to cover Sawmill’s push into social media in 2007, and then in 2008 under the headline: “What Are You Doing? PR firms answer that question and more via social networking phenomenon Twitter”

I’m perfecting my awesome swing for Tuesday’s sold-out ninth annual “The Brick Companies Classic” fund-raiser golf event hosted by Sawmill client The Brick Companies with proceeds going to their TBC Foundation.

It’s anticipated that the ninth year will be the charm and they’ll break the $1 million donation milestone. Since this is my first time swingin’ the old clubs at the event held at Queenstown Harbor, will this milestone-smasher simply be a coincidence or will my presence be, once again, over the top?
