BALTIMORE, Md. (August 19, 2009) — Jeffrey A. Davis, partner with Baltimore PR firm Sawmill Marketing Public Relations, will speak on the topic of social media for public relations at two conferences this fall.

Davis will present the latest thinking on “Twitter and PR” at the 2009 SMEI Conference and Social Media Road Show, a national gathering of sales and marketing professionals presented by Sales & Marketing Executives International, Inc. Joining him will be an impressive lineup of co-presenters, including Gus Sentementes, technology reporter with The Baltimore Sun, Dave Troy of Roundhouse Technology, Steve Kruskamp of 1st Mariner Bank, Matt Goddard of R2integrated and Greg Cangialosi of Blue Sky Factory.

For more information on the Social Media Road Show, September 25-27 at the Renaissance Baltimore Harborplace Hotel, visit the SMEI registration page or go to www.smei.org.

In October, Davis will present two workshops at the 32nd Annual Chesapeake Conference, the annual gathering of communications professionals sponsored by the Maryland Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America.

During a morning session, he will provide an update on the role of social media in traditional public relations programs. He’ll present a second hands-on workshop in the afternoon that will include a look at the “Sawmill Guide to Baltimore Media on Twitter,” recognized nationally as the most comprehensive list of its kind, now up to nearly 200 names.

For more information about PRSA and the Chesapeake Conference, scheduled for October 6 at the Sheraton Baltimore North, Towson, Md., visit the chapter’s Web site at www.prsamd.org.

Tweetup at the Baltimore Business Journal

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Here we are this morning at the Baltimore Business Journal’s first-ever tweetup! It was good to see the new offices on Pratt Street, take a tour of the newsroom and catch up with our BBJ friends. You’ll see Reporter/Researcher Rachel Bernstein with Jeff; Susan and Managing Editor Scott Graham; and the impressive new lobby with scrolling news ticker (that’s Scott Dance speaking with Julekha Dash). If you want to follow them on Twitter, go to our “Sawmill Guide to Baltimore Media on Twitter” section (see the link above) and scroll to the BBJ listing.

<Sorry to disappoint. Having trouble with the pics>

Bye-Bye, BlogPotomac

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Buzz_webBuzz had been stewing for the past week. Stewing that he lost both time and money, billable as well as oop. Stewing that he was an unwilling voyeur to a near day-long “insiders only” social media love fest. Stewing that, for the most part, he felt talked down to or talked around, dismissing or ignoring his own knowledge of and experience with social media.

So, what is the source of this week-long stew, you ask?  Try the one-track June 12  BlogPotomac when at times, watching the flickering laptop screens was more interesting than listening to what was coming from the stage, with the exception of Shel Holtz and Ford’s Scott Monty who each offered valuable insights on their views, uses and thoughts on all things social media today as well as in the future.  Thank you guys.

Overall the day for Buzz was relatively low energy, low interest and low value – yes, even at $95.  An entire segment on personal branding? Come on. Others had a similar reaction, and it even carried over to the official Blog Potomac happy hour event.

As if to confirm this sentiment, event organizer Geoff Livingston announced that a third and final BlogPotomac will take place in October, and then five days later the Senior VP/Social Media at PR firm CRT/tanaka came out with this blog post with the headline: “Why a Final BlogPotomac: Social Media Really Is Dead.” Wow. Who knew?

Which got Buzz to thinking…as we see this shift to a new stage of social media with all the talk about ”rock stars” (yes, some actually say this!) and personal branding and how to handle this new-found ”fame,” why not develop and host a social media event that brings the conversation back to reality? Anyone out there want to join in?

Yani Tsengyg_0507_03We’re probably not going to see tweets like: ”Really nailed it with the driver, now thinking 7 or 8 iron,” or “Looking like this putt breaks left to right. Whaddya think, tweeps?”

No, the players at this week’s McDonald’s LPGA Championship in Havre de Grace, Md., (@McDsLPGA) won’t be tweeting on the course, but they’re getting a lot of attention – and encouragement from the top, including LPGA commissioner Carolyn Bivens – to continue engaging with fans before and after their rounds via Twitter.

We got a taste of their tweets last week when the State Farm Classic was played, and now we’ll get an insider’s view during their play just up I-95 at Bulle Rock. @AtlanticGolf (Sawmill client) is following all of them and we encourage others to do the same, as interaction between players and fans can only be good for the game! We counted 33 LPGA golfers on Twitter, including last year’s McDonald’s champion Yani Tseng, in photo, above (@YaniTseng on Twitter) who tells us via Twitter that she’s already had dinner with Taiwan Ambassador Jason Yuan and that Bulle Rock is in great shape, but watch out for the 4-inch rough!

Popular LPGA players on Twitter include Morgan Pressel (@MorganPressel), Paula Creamer (@ThePaulaCreamer), Michelle Wie (@TheMichelleWie), Natalie Gulbis (@Natalie_Gulbis) and Suzann Pettersen ( @SuzannPettersen)

For your convenience, here is a link to all the LPGA players on Twitter!

Here it is! “The Sawmill Guide to Maryland Media on Twitter” (2012 edition). In the spirit of social media sharing, Baltimore PR firm Sawmill Marketing Public Relations created this list in 2008, launched it on January 1, 2009 and has maintained it ever since.

Last update: May 15, 2012

Have Any Names to Share?

If so, let us know via email or comment at the end of this blog post.

Finally, if you would like to view all of these accounts in one location, follow Jeff’s list – http://twitter.com/#/list/contactjeff/baltimore-media — a cool way to see what ALL  members of the Maryland media are collectively tweeting. Kind of a one-stop news channel and an especially handy way to follow a breaking news story and to get the collective tweets from all who cover the region!

BALTIMORE, Md. (October 6, 2008) – AOEware, a Philadelphia-based software company that has created an online tool that bridges the gap between social networking and social computing, has selected Maryland PR firm Sawmill Marketing Public Relations for a national launch campaign to promote the company’s newest product BINDpoint, described as “instant messaging on steroids.”

While traditional chat systems focus on users connecting via peer-to-peer services, BINDpoint, a free service, provides people with the ability to connect instantly without needing to install and configure instant messaging software. Using just a web browser or supported mobile device, people can interact instantly with multiple online communities by way of its streamlined, non-intrusive interface.

Sawmill is implementing a comprehensive national and trade media relations campaign as well as a social media program that will include outreach to gaming, online and business communities.

About AOEware
AOEware is a software company offering a unique “open architecture” messaging platform that provides real-time communications without the creation of a “walled garden.” Its mission is to support the progression of social networking as it evolves into a world of social computing. The firm’s core product, BINDpoint, functions as an interactive communication and collaboration system for individuals, communities and commercial organizations. For more information visit www.AOEware.com

BALTIMORE, Md. (September 10, 2008) – Jeffrey A. Davis and Susan J. Anthony, partners with Baltimore PR firm Sawmill Marketing Public Relations, will discuss practical public relations during a workshop sponsored by SMEI-Baltimore/Washington (Sales & Marketing Executives International, Baltimore/Washington Chapter) on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008 at the Loyola Graduate Center, 2034 Greenspring Drive, Timonium, Md.

The workshop, “Putting Practical Public Relations to Work for You in a Down Economy,” begins with networking at 7:30 a.m. The program begins at 8 a.m. and concludes at 9:30 a.m.

During the presentation, the Baltimore PR firm veterans will share the following practical tips and tools:

- How to use a press release – and resulting coverage – as a sales tool.

“We always enjoy opportunities to speak with organizations and their members about ways PR can add value to what they are trying to achieve,” said Davis. “The SMEI workshop is especially timely because during difficult economic times, the marketing budget is often the first expense executives look to cut, yet an effective use of public relations can help carry a company through a downturn and beyond.”

We’ve been part of the Baltimore community for decades, handling community relations and media relations for our clients, and never before witnessed such a change in the local newspaper scene.

The Baltimore Sun: buyouts cause dozens and dozens of experienced news staffers to head for the exits, while the editors work internally on a late August/early September release of a ”re-design” expected to greatly reduce the space alloted for news. Already, readers have seen the elimination of a separate Business section. There’s more to come, sources tell us. Once household names, many reporters are taking on new careers (we know of a Pulitzer candidate turned inner-city kindergarten teacher). Who knows what the new Sun will bring, while the online version of the paper continues to see increases in visitors.

Meanwhile at The Examiner, they’ve switched to a Thursday- and Sunday-only home delivery schedule and introduced a competitive lineup of features that makes the tabloid-sized newspaper now appear surprisingly full of content: Credo, a page featuring a Q and A with an interesting local resident (the inaugural issue featured a Columbia, Md. native who is an astronaut); Green Scene, showing a company’s environmental innovations (have we got a client for you!); and Kudos!, honoring those residents who have achieved a special recogntion for their work or expertise. And there’s much more. If the paper can shake some of its startup ills (to begin with, way too many typos and factual errors by a young staff) it will continue to make a serious run at The Sun.

It’s tough times for the print newspaper, so the innovations – or missteps – here in Baltimore are sure to provide lessons for others.

Considering whether it would be a good idea to arrange a media training session for your company spokesperson? Then immediately click on this link featuring “The Economy? Words Fail Me,” Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank’s video recap of a press conference gone bad.

This is probably the most alarming example we’ve seen showing the dangerous mix of (a.) a well-meaning and educated spokesman who’s uncomfortable and not fully prepared, and, (b.) a member of the print media (armed with a cameraperson) on the hunt for a new and entertaining angle to a story.

There is no doubt about the expertise of interview subject and Harvard Ph.D. Phillip Swagel, the Treasury Department’s “sacrificial lamb” for an early July 2008 press conference about the economy. But some basic media training and interview preparation techniques could have made his day in the spotlight a little less painful to watch.

BALTIMORE, Md. – The current issue of the Baltimore Business Journal quotes Sawmill Marketing Public Relations partner Jeffrey A. Davis on the current PR strategy of Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon. Davis, a former newspaper reporter, said the mayor has handled herself well as she faces an investigation by the prosecutor’s office.

“One rule in crisis public relations is to announce the bad news yourself as quickly as possible,” Davis is quoted as saying in the Maryland business newspaper.

If you don’t announce bad news yourself, the media will find someone who will say something, and that source will not likely know all the facts or properly communicate your point of view, the Baltimore PR firm partner says.

The mayor recently employed a unique strategy by showing up unannounced at a happy hour function attended by members of the Baltimore media. See the PR Buzzsaw account of this crisis communications strategy here.
